Canada:
As we all know, Canada
has the largest population of Chinese outside China itself.
Most of them mirgrated from Hong Kong. We are curious about how chinese
culture is preserved in Canada, therefore after much futile searching about
this topic, we decided to approach our very own Canadian teacher about
this topic.
During a short interview with Ms. Jennifer
Chen on 4th of May, she told us that her parents and grandparents do celebrate
Ching Ming. When queried about their She admitted that she does not go
along with them and does not know the date Ching Ming falls on.
She told us that her generation of Chinese
- Canadians do not celebrate any more of these chinese traditions but conform
to the Western Culture and Society. For example
she states that Christmas held a deeper meaning to her than Chinese New
Year.
She does not expect her children to follow chinese culture and neither
does she expect the next generation of Chinese - Canadian to do so. Instead
she said every day is Ching Ming, and as in Western culture, they
would go down anytime to visit the grave whenever they felt it was necessary.
We agree that this is a better way.
It is quite sad to see a community lose its roots in such a short time.
The question we would have to ask ourselves now, "Is
this going to be Singapore's future too?"
